A Perfect, Smooth Finish
Plastering (interior) or rendering (exterior) is a construction or ornamentation technique done with various kinds of plaster, which involves applying one or more layers onto a surface or wall structure.
The technique is used for finishing, rather than load-bearing, and it takes many years to become a really proficient plasterer.
Nowadays, plaster can contain either gypsum, lime, or cement, but regardless of the specific mix, all kinds are worked in a similar way. Dry powder is first mixed with fresh water, forming a firm, workable paste. This is then carefully applied to the surface, and smoothed as required before being allowed to harden.
Wet plaster is an earthy colour, with tones of dark pink, brown and red. After drying – which may take anything from hours to days, depending on the thickness – the colour changes to a light, creamy pink shade.
Plastering Case Study
In this recent example, I was tasked with reworking a 1920’s-era Sitting Room, which had incredibly uneven, rough surfaces and a particularly problematic, lumpy Artex ceiling. The job required first a Carlite Bonding undercoat, then two further coats of finished plaster to achieve the finish needed.
